Thoughts to Move You Forward on Saturday

The Power of Beauty in Your Home

We all want order in our lives; we want control over what is frustrating and overwhelming. But practicality is not the only reason. We have an aesthetic reason, as well. We want to be able to express our best selves in our own individual decorating style.

In disgust, a frustrated single woman wrote in an email: “My general problem is that I don’t have a decor of any kind . . . just general chaos and clutter. I’m sure I could make the stuff work together, if I could just pull my mind together and organize my junky house.”

Somewhere deep inside, once the hope of organization is confirmed, we long for more. We long for beauty.

Beauty is not a yes or no option for the healthy soul. Something within us is invigorated when our eye catches sight of a charming room, a beautifully set table, shining surfaces with balanced decor, or a lovely garden. We’re like William Wordsworth, who rhapsodized poetically that at the sight of a field of flowers, his heart was filled with pleasure and it “danced with the daffodils.”[3]

Those of us who live surrounded by disorder yet still maintain optimism and vigor . . . well, that says a lot about our natural stamina—and positive outlook! Not everybody can keep going as we do under these conditions.

There is no doubt about it. Clutter is ugly and disheartening, but clear and shining surfaces inspire. The play of dappled shadows on a clean carpet gladdens in a way that is difficult to define or explain intellectually. But the heart confirms it’s true when, like Wordsworth’s, it dances with pleasure at the sight.

Author and naturalist John Muir has said, “Everybody needs beauty, as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to the body and soul.”[4]
